From the 20th until the 22nd of august the Super Versus Battle takes place, it’s one of the largest vs fighting tournament in Europe. One of the figures of this event is Daigo Umehara who is not to be introduced. His presence boosts the Hype of the tournament!
Many players throughout Europe have come, regulars like Ryan Hart and Ricky TTT or others that we are not used to see but that are known as very good players like Skatan Milla and Yagami (Sweden) for example.

Most of all, many French players have come for the occasion. A team France: « Zahia », completely cracked and in top shape to represent our country: *aAa* Lorddvd (Honda), Evans (Fei Long), Starnab (Fei Long), Luffy (Rose) and Renegad (Boxer).

But there were also other french players like Genki and his son Kusanagi, Cnul, Ezo, Nayte and our two companions from Final Round: Benjamin and Valentin, that I’ve just met and are very nice! There were also French speaking players from Switzerland, V-Ryu and Funna with whom we’ve spent quite some time and are still cool!

Not to mention our favourite SF speaker *aAa* Ken Bogard to light a fire to each important (or not) match and our one and only cheerleader Sarah (Luffys girlfriend).

There were also French players for SF 3rd Strike like Yanban among others (whose names I’ve forgotten sorry!), and for Soul Calibur IV: Kira and Pantocrator.

Opening at 10 am but the tournament is announced at noon.
I arrived by noon with Lorddvd and Ken Bogard. The room is a gymnasium so it’s very wide and there is a lot of room. As we came in, we noticed a booth that was more crowded than the others: Daigo was warming up playing Beat by!

The pools didn’t begin before 3pm. The waiting was LONG as it was planned 3 hours earlier, but the worst was that…In total, there were 60 pools of 5-6 players each. And it was 10 by 10. I was in pool 53, and as it was going I knew that I wouldn’t play before the evening. That wasn’t cool… :sLuckily, there was the Soul Calibur pool around 5pm to wake me up (Still it’s late for pools lol!). I asked the guys of Madcatz and to Markman (the maker of TE sticks) to lend me the new Chun Li Limited Edition stick for PS3 as I didn’t have a PS3 stick, it’s really beautiful !

Chun Li Stick

I finish first of pool, it was kind of strange for me to get back to the game. I lost a lot of skill and couldn’t train before the SVB because I lost the game CD… -_-After that, my SSFIV pool begins.Funny coïncidence, one of my opponents is called « Anti-Girl » Haha. I was the only girl out of 300 players, and out of 60 pools I had to play in his!
Also, they made a big mistake on the pool board …  “aAa Kayak”… I can’t figure how they managed to mix things up that much!!! Of course, the French players had a good laugh calling me Kayak and making jokes all day long (they still do now), I and know this is going to follow me for a long time ;_ ;…

I manage to beat all my opponents without too much trouble, until the last one, a Blanka player. He wins 2-1, it was very close but I was at least reassured to make it through the pools! (two by pool)But I was told that nothing was decided! In fact, I thought that this Blanka had won against everyone but he had lost against a Honda (who I won against). This means we were three to have the same amount of victories… And only two would pass! The referee takes out 3 papers and we had to choose one, which would decide against which player we would play to determine the 2 pool winners… I hate that kind of thing, as I’m usually very unlucky at this! With luck, I was to play against the Honda I had easily won against! The referee told me that if I won, I would be first of pool. And that’s just what I did! J
After the pools, some have played their 1/16th… I was happy not to, as I was far too tired, it was past 10h30. At eleven, we were told that the following matches would take place on the Saturday, during the afternoon.

Back to the hotel, for a deserved rest!

It’s also the day of the team tournament. Ryan Hart tells me: “ By the way, I signed you up in my team with Daigo, V-Ryu and Fuma!” The name of the team is “Winners Stay On”.
Very surprised to see him take me on his team lol, I saw that as an additional occasion to play, and asked if I could by the first in line each time. But, big disappointment for Logan (the creator of the team who asked Ryan to fetch new players) who wanted to be part of the team and had to exclude Fuma…:(

Two teams were very dangerous atop of this one, one of them being the French team called Team Zahia. 😀 and the team of PR Balrog who alone can strike a full team, any of them.

Team FR Zahia

We make it to the semi finals (cheers for the great matches of V-Ryu with his top notch Makoto) where we meet the french team, Evans beats me, but not only me…He striked the full team! He easily beat Ryan Hart, V-Ryu, and did a spectacular come back during the match vs Daigo! Great game, cheers!
Daigo said later that his Fei Long is the best he’s ever played against.  After our defeat, Daigo challenged Evans and beat him 5-1.

Kayane Tournoi Team

(on s’était déjà rencontré à l’EVO)

As for the solo tournament, I won against a Balrog player 2-0 and have lost against WiseBlade, a Fuerte player, 0-2. I didn’t understand anything about Fuerte lol! I need training with Dawgtanian soon…
We also had a big surprise for this tournament, as Ono, the maker of Street Fighter, has come. Still as popular and very close to the players, he granted a photo and autograph session in the afternoon. There was too much crowd for me to say hello, so I said to myself I’d see him later (We’d met during the EVO).

Later in the day, I met him before his return to Japan, we could discuss a little while and I was surprised of his very good English!

The French have reached the tournament team finals against the PR Balrog team! We were told the match was planned at 11h. Knowing it would certainly be delayed, I slept longer and arrived at 1pm…And still, nothing had been played! The delays are too important compared to announcements… :s

The large room was dedicated to each tournement finals and displayed on large screen. As I was getting sleepy around 4pm ( there were only 4 SSFIV freeplay consoles for everyone), I was called for Soul Calibur.

I played my first match on scene against a Sophitia player. He says: “ You’re the one who took me out during the world tournament in Cannes 2004, remember ?”

Ohh, I knew he reminded me of someone. A player I must pay attention to as he has efficient punishments. And when we were well prepared mentally, we go to the character menu…the ONLY character locked is his, Sophitia. And to unlock her, it takes money in the game and there was none…To get some you must go through the story mode or something like that……A shame to show that on a big screen. Lol.

We had a 20 minute break, time to find another PS3 with all characters unlocked t_t, that wiped our feet lol.

I win 2-0 but the player has a great potential, it’s easy too see. Too bad the English community does not have regular tournaments he could have been very good.

I then met Pantocrator in semi finals (French) who plays Siegfried. I tried to remember the match-up before playing against him; Sieg can be very tough if you don’t play very reactively. I win 2-0, it seems the match-up came back to me properly. J

The final is against Kira, awwh Kiras Cervantes! I knew I would take some exotic phases that he found and that I’ve never seen before, and it was the case I took many, it’s been too long since I’ve stopped playing. He did a lot of work on his phases and his character and I could be seen. He won 2-0 and I didn’t understand much of his phases. :p

So I finish second of the Soul Calibur IV tournament, which is not bad, I wasn’t expecting much as I signed in more by principle since it’s my base game. Who knows, maybe I’ll come back to SC4 if a major tournament comes up…But as for now, nothing gives me the motivation to play it again. Still I was very happy to play the aggressive and tricky style of Xianghua, because with Chun Li I play the exact opposite by zoning.

The SSFIV Team Final is then played, unfortunately not on big screen…

Evans and Luffy lead the team through the match against the PR Balrog Team, who was completely owned by Luffys Rose.

Congratulations to them! They prove that the French level is among the best of the world!

A little freeplay then with PR Balrog, until Daigo arrives with his translator to train before the tournament. Daigo plays the first matches against me until a ton of: “I’m next!” were heard lol, there are still who wish to play with the Beast!

Daigo VS Kayane

Finally, the SSFIV Solo tournament begins on scene.
A great atmosphere for the English players of course!  But for us French, even with only about ten of us, we killed our voices encouraging our local figures Evans and Luffy!

Public

Unfortunately Evans loses against the English player Yota (Dhalsim) who is only aged of 15. It’s too bad after the domination of the match from Evans, and then I don’t understand what happened he started rushing constantly without a break. A super from Yota and it reverses the match! JThere was a thunder of claps for the victory of Yota with all his friends running on the scene to jump on him! A defeat is difficult to swallow when you see so much enthousiasm on the opposing side!
But nothing is lost for France. Luffy is still engaged in the run…And we are all confident that he has all his chances to win, that he is mentally strong enough and that he will take the right decisions.

Luffy wins his matches very easily. Daigo takes out PR Balrog. Ryan Hart also wins on his side…

And comes the match that would determine the opponent of Luffy in the finals: Ryan Hart vs Daigo.
First Match: Certainly the most surprising thing during the tournament: Daigo chooses Cammy ! And Ryan takes Ryu.What happened in Daigos head? Especially his Cammy is ..very basic and disappointing to see.In fact, Ryan Hart and Daigo had played together in freeplay. Ryan who never managed to beat Dhalsim with his Ryu, had decided to take Dhalsim against Daigo to see how he would make out and learn the match-up Ryu-Dhalsim a little better thanks to that. But Ryan beat Daigo with Dhalsim!  And Daigo switched to Cammy and beat Ryans Dhalsim. This shows that against a very strong Dhalsim, Daigo would have such a hard time that he’d change his character. So, with Daigo thinking that after the freeplay matches Ryan would take Dhalsim to beat his ryu, he chose Cammy. Ryan had been smarter than Daigo, by keeping his Ryu. Ryan beats easily his Cammy, and Daigo has no choice than coming back to Ryu…The match is very close, and if Daigo loses the match he’s definitely out of the competition, since there is no loser bracket. And we were sure that if Ryan had won, Luffy would have big chances to win the tournament!
Ryan did a surprising match against Daigos Ryu, he did well and won 2-0! Ryan will be the finalist to play against Luffy!

Ryan Hart VS Luffy SSFIV Final

As we thought, Luffy clearly takes the advantage and that could be seen as of the first round. We were very confident in his victory, and it’s by 2-0 that Luffy manages to win the SVB SSFIV final, under the cries of joy of Sarah (his girlfriend) but also all of the French, very happy for him! 😉
Congratulations to all, the French place themselves in the top players with SSFIV, SC4 and SF 3rd Strike! We can be proud of our community. 😉
